YG Entertainment’s Teddy Park, SM Entertainment’s Yoo Young-jin, and more named in Billboard’s 50 Best Music Producers of the 21st Century

Producers take centerstage in Billboard’s list of 50 Greatest Producers of the 21st Century.

On Wednesday (21/07), the publication listed fifty of the most innovative and notable music producers of the century. Notable names include the likes of Swedish pop producer Max Martin , American rapper Kanye West, and Bleachers frontman Jack Antonoff.  The list also features K-pop producers Teddy Park, and Yoo Young-jin.

Teddy Park, who is known for producing hits for 2NE1, BLACKPINK, and Big Bang, was ranked at number 25, the highest among any Asian producers. Acclaimed for tracks with notable hip-hop and EDM influences, the magazine listed 2NE1’s ‘I Am the Best’ as his defining work, which helped the K-pop industry break into the United States in the early 2010s.

Notable for collaborating with Super Junior, Shinhwa, and EXO, SM Entertainment’s Yoo Young-jin is ranked at number 39 on the list. With his “blaring keys and insistent dance beats in his work,” his involvement in producing Super Junior’s 2009 comeback single ‘Sorry Sorry’ is noted as his defining work, giving the group their most successful song to date.

Jack Antonoff comes in at number 9, making the top 10. The Bleachers frontman’s signature sound was noted for being less of a technique but banking on the trust with the singers he’s worked with such as Taylor Swift, Lorde, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Clairo. Antonoff was behind the boards for critically-acclaimed records such as Lorde’s Melodrama, Lana Del Rey‘s Norman F*cking Rockwell, and Taylor Swift’s Folklore.

Aside from being a prolific singer-songwriter and rapper, Kanye West is also known for his “known for his pitched-up soul samples over knocking beats.”  The sound became the trend in pop music before West turned to Auto-Tune in 2008’s 808s and Heartbreaks. West is ranked at number six with two Jay-Z songs “Izzo (H.O.V.A)’ and ‘Takeover’ listed as his defining works and Teyana Taylor’s mini-EP KTSE as a must-listen.

Topping the list is Max Martin who has produced pop’s biggest hits throughout the years from the likes of the Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, Taylor Swift, Britney Spears, The Weeknd, and Ariana Grande. Martin gave Swift’s songs his signature pop sheen – ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,’ ‘I Knew You Were Trouble,’ ’22,’ ‘Blank Space,’ ‘End Game,’ and more.
