Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson resigns from role with Championship club 23rd in table
Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson has resigned from the club, a day after losing to fellow relegation rivals Derby County.
That 1-0 defeat saw Derby, who have been deducted 21 points, leapfrog Peterborough into 22nd in the Championship table.
Peterborough co-owner Darragh MacAnthony said: “Myself and my two partners regard Darren as one of the greatest managers of this football club, most certainly in the modern era.
“The success we have enjoyed with him at the helm has been unrivalled and he will always be described as a legend by myself and my partners.
“I want to personally thank him for all his hard work on behalf of the club, particularly in his third spell when he dealt with the unquestionable frustration at the season being cut short due to COVID-19 and then responding by securing promotion the following season against all the odds.”
Ferguson took charge at Peterborough in 2019, with the club denied the chance to fight for a League One play-off spot in his first season in charge due to the curtailment owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 50-year-old then guided the side to a second-place finish and promotion last season.
However, results have been poor this season on Peterborough’s return to the second-tier. The Cambridgeshire side have won just five games all season and are five points from safety.
Ferguson, son of Manchester United legend Alex, had been in his third spell in charge at Peterborough, having managed them between 2007-09 and 2011-15. He has also held roles at Preston North End and Doncaster Rovers.
