One of the greatest football managers of all time, Marcello Lippi led Italy to glory in the 2006 FIFA World Cup. In a managerial career spanning 37 years he has lifted 19 trophies, including one UEFA Champions League, one Intercontinental Cup, one AFC Champions League, four Italian Supercups, one Coppa Italia, three Chinese Super League titles, one Chinese FA Cup and five Serie A titles. The Italian was the first and only coach so far to win the AFC Champions League and the UEFA Champions League.

Hailing from the town of Viareggio in northern Tuscany, Lippi was a professional footballer who played as a defender, mostly for Sampdoria. After ending his playing career at Lucchese in 1982, Lippi returned to Sampdoria to coach the youth team. His first managerial break came three years later at Pontedera and after managing in the lower leagues for the likes of Siena, Carrarese and Pistolese he became manager of Serie A team Cesena in 1989.

The world first stood up and noticed Lippi when he led Napoli to a place in the UEFA Cup in the 1993-94 season. His success at the club made him a managerial target for the top clubs in Serie A, and Juventus won the race to secure the manger’s services. He enjoyed five incredibly successful seasons with the club, winning five Serie A titles.

Lippi has enjoyed many successes throughout his sensational career, but has said that winning the World Cup was his “most satisfying moment as a coach”.
