There reportedly appears to be no clarity on the future of Everton goalkeeper Asmir Begovic who is in the final year of his contract.
According to the Liverpool Echo, younger keepers could step up or someone else may be brought in to replace him as Jordan Pickford’s deputy.
The Toffees decided to exercise the option to extend his deal by a year this summer and they also snubbed an offer from Manchester United to keep him at Goodison Park.
Keep him
As long as Begovic does not ask to leave, it makes no sense to let him go as he’s an experienced number two goalkeeper.
While it’s hard to replace Jordan Pickford or even get games in the side due to his fitness, the Bosnian does not seem to be demanding regular playing time.
At 35, he’s happy being the veteran who offers his experience and dressing room presence rather than stepping out on the field of play week in and week out.
Manchester United would’ve been tempting, but he did not really make a noise when Everton decided that he was going nowhere this summer.
Whenever he’s called upon, Begovic has delivered the goods and we’re likely to see him again in the next round of the Carabao Cup.
If there are any young keepers that Frank Lampard believes can be an upgrade on the former Stoke City goalkeeper then they must also be given their chance in the sun and if Begovic is demoted to third in the pecking order, then parting ways with him makes sense.
