Hello! I provide play based intervention for children with CAS and general motor speech disorders. Initial consultations are comprised of clinical observations and an oral motor examination to look at oral structures. I follow a PROMPT based treatment philosophy in choosing motor speech targets and combine tactile kinesthetic input and oral motor work, depending on the child’s needs.
I have taught parent PROMPT groups in the mid-2000s. More recently, I have provided in-service trainings for local schools and treatment centers.
I love for families to be involved in the therapy process. As a Hanen certified therapist, I believe that parent involvement is key for a child’s progress. Depending on the family, parents may join in therapy sessions, receive hands-on training to support their child’s needs, and/or video clips of therapy sessions.
I often use a multi-modal approach to language when communication is inhibited by motor speech deficits. I have children who use AAC systems to bridge language while we work on the motor speech needs; systems range from iPad systems (LAMP WFL, TouchChat HD) to PRC devices (Accent 800 or 1000), to lower tech systems such as PECS or bigMack switches.) I believe communication and language development need to be addressed at all levels, especially when a child enters into toddler stages and begins to formulate phrases. This helps so that when the motor system improves, the language has already been developed!
