About
Koh Phi Phi
Koh Phi Phi is a cluster of islands, 6 of which have been named. The common feature of all of these islands is their steep sided sea cliffs and small bays with beaches creating fantastic scenery pictures of which feature in most travel guides to Thailand. The largest of these islands, and the only one which is permanently inhabited and has places where visitors can stay, is Koh Phi Phi Don. The other large island is Koh Phi Phi Le which is where you will find the famous Maya Beach where they filmed the ‘The Beach’, although at the moment it is prohibited to visit Koh Phi Phi Le which has been closed to tourists in an attempt to reverse 10 years or more of environmental damage caused by the vast number of people visiting following the release of the film.
The main town in Koh Phi Phi Don is located on a thin spit of land between Tonsai Bay, where the island’s main harbour is located, and Loh Dalum Beach, which is the busiest beach in Koh Phi Phi. This area is one of the busiest places in the whole of Thailand, and far from being a tropical paradise in fact its a party zone for younger foreign visitors. The scenery in Koh Phi Phi, however, is stunning and its no surprise that a visit to the island is on the travel itinerary for so many visitors to the Andaman Coast of Thailand. For a more peaceful stay on Koh Phi Phi consider booking one of the resorts in the North of Koh Phi Phi on Laem Tong Beach which you need to travel to by local taxi boat, but you do get to avoid the crowds by staying on Laem Tong Beach and to enjoy some really spectacular scenery.
