Teddy Sheringham is one of the best known footballers of his generation, and the eleventh-highest goal scorer in the history of the English Premier League, hitting the back of the net 146 times. The former English footballer’s glittering 24-year career saw him play as an intelligent forward for teams including Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, and he became the Premier League’s 19th highest appearance maker, also earning 51 caps for England and scoring 11 international goals. In 2001, Sheringham was named the PFA Players’ Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year.
Sheringham’s goal-scoring ability was evident from the start at Millwall, the club where he started his career and scored 111 goals, becoming the side’s second all-time leading scorer. A stint at Nottingham Forest saw Sheringham score the club’s first Premiership goal, and before long he was snapped up by Tottenham Hotspur, where he became a favourite with fans and the team’s top scorer in the 1993-94 season.
A move to Manchester United proved even more fruitful for Sheringham, and he helped the side win three Premiership titles, one FA Cup, one UEFA Champions League, an Intercontinental Cup and the FA Charity Shield. In 1999, Sheringham’s career soared to new heights when he scored an equaliser and assisted Manchester United’s winning goal against Bayern Munich in the 1999 UEFA Champions League Final.
In the following years he re-joined Spurs, and also played for Portsmouth and West Ham, extending his remarkable career to become the oldest outfield player to both appear and score in a Premier League match. As a valuable member of the England squad, he played in both the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cups and the 1996 UEFA European Championship, earning 51 caps for his country in total.
