Jay Jay the Jet Plane is an American musical children’s television series based on the original direct-to-video series from 1994 to 1996. Because PBS co-owned Sprout when the channel was launched, it aired a variety of shows from its archive library on Sprout, including reruns of Jay Jay the Jet Plane. Reruns are currently airing on Trinity Broadcasting Network’s Smile.
Plot
- “Jay Jay and his airplane friends bring stories of fun and adventure, all from their magical home at Tarrytown Airport, “where imagination takes flight!” Every day is a new adventure in Tarrytown, where the adventures lead to discoveries!” (link)
Characters
- Jay Jay. Male. Child. Brother figure. Small 6-year-old blue jet plane. He is the titular character and main protagonist of the series. Originally voiced by the late Mary Kay Bergman, then was replaced with Debi Derryberry after her passing.
- Tracy. Female. Child. Sister figure. Small 6-year-old pink jet plane who is Jay Jay’s best friend forever. She has normal hearing but can understand American Sign Language (as proven in “Jay Jay and the Magic Books”). Voiced by Gina Ribisi, then replaced with Sandy Fox.
- Snuffy. Male. Child. Cousin figure. Small 4-year-old green propeller monoplane who is a good friend of Jay Jay and Tracy. He is equipped for skywriting. In episode consistency (which depends on the order), “Are We There Yet” says that he has not flown further away from Tarrytown than Lightning Bug Lake, but other episodes show him flying much further. Snuffy still has not gotten rid of his original shyness after “Grumpy O’Malley”, but in many other episodes, he shows no sign of shyness. Voiced by Gina Ribisi, then replaced with Sandy Fox.
- Herky. Male. Child. Small 5-year-old yellow helicopter. He rolls his “R”s whenever he speaks, and often pronounces stressed “er” as long vocalic “r” ([ɹ̩]), e.g. “I’m Herky” as [aɪm hɹ̩ːˈkǐ], with a strong high-rising pitch accent on the last “-y”. He has skids instead of wheels, and cannot taxi on the ground. Voiced by the late Mary Kay Bergman, and replaced with Debi Derryberry after her passing.
- Big Jake. Male. Adult. Father figure. Silver Lockheed Super Constellation. Cargo carrier. Propeller-driven. Voiced by Chuck Morgan and later Michael Donovan.
- Savannah. Female. Adult. Mother figure. Silver supersonic airliner. She was made in Savannah, Georgia (as proven in “I’m Swamped!”), hence her name and Southern accent. She somewhat resembles the Concorde supersonic jet. Voiced by the late Mary Kay Bergman, and replaced with Debi Derryberry after her passing.
- Old Oscar. Male. Senior. Grandfather figure. Old green biplane. Voiced by Chuck Morgan and later Michael Donovan.
- Brenda Blue: Woman in blue clothing usually wears a red or blue cap. She is in charge of the airport and is the ace mechanic. She does not use the airport’s control tower, but she can communicate with the planes by a portable two-way radio from the ground. Played by Eve Whittle.
- Mrs. Blue: Brenda Blue’s mother, who sometimes visits Tarrytown Airport. Appeared in “Brenda’s Mother’s Day”.
- Miss Lee: a deaf and silent librarian at Tarrytown Library who knows American Sign Language. Appeared in “Tracy’s Song” and “Jay Jay and the Magic Books”.
- E.Z. O’Malley: He founded E.Z. Airlines (as proven in “Old Oscar Leads the Parade”), and his cousins are Grumpy O’Malley (who lives at Dewdrop Farm), Pierre O’Malley (who lives in France), and Tex O’Malley (who lives in Texas) as proven in “Grumpy O’Malley”. He appeared in “Big Jake’s Birthday Surprise”, “Grumpy O’Malley”, and “Old Oscar Leads the Parade”. Played by Brian Nahas.
- Revvin’ Evan. Male. Red fire engine, Cousin of Tuffy. Voiced by the late Mary Kay Bergman, and replaced with Debi Derryberry after her passing.
- Tuffy. Female. The blue and orange tow truck who first appeared in “Tuffy the Tiny Tow Truck”, cousin of Revvin’ Evan; has a speech impediment. Voiced by Sandy Fox.
- Breezy: a monarch butterfly who only appeared in “Jay Jay’s Butterfly Adventure”.
- Bobby Bee and Billy Bee: two bees who first appeared in “Catch the Buzz”.
History on Sprout
The show was first shown on September 26th, 2005, along with several other shows, to celebrate the launch of the Sprout network. It launched with the VOD service prior. The series was horribly received for its creepy faces and being a Thomas & Friends “rip-off.”
The show aired at 6:30 and 2:30 when Sprout launched, and later at 6:00 when Musical Mornings with Coo launched and 10:30 when The Sunny Side Up Show launched.
It even had its very own Sprout Diner snack, Jay Jay’s Chicken Salad Plane. The recipe was unbranded once the show stopped airing on the channel.
It also had a Birthday Show snack, Jay Jay’s Sky High Pizza Pie.
The show’s final airing on Sprout was September 2, 2008.
