League Managers Association – DARREN FERGUSON

Darren Ferguson is the current manager of Peterborough United, his third spell at the club as manager.

Prior to his role at Peterborough, Ferguson was manager of Doncaster Rovers, having been appointed in October 2015.

In his first spell as manager of Peterborough, Ferguson had previously won promotion in each of his first two full seasons to confirm his pedigree as a rising star of the trade. 

When he took charge in January 2007, Posh were in freefall after losing their previous six games. Darren stabilised the team in 10th place before launching back-to-back promotion assaults, leading Peterborough into the Championship in 2009, and being named League One Manager of the Year

Ferguson was later confirmed as the new manager of Preston North End on 6 January 2010 and he remained at Deepdale until 29 December 2010.

In his second spell at Peterborough, he enjoyed immediate success on his return by securing his third promotion of his managerial career, with a 3-0 play-off final victory over Huddersfield Town at Old Trafford – back on the ground where he had started his own career. Darren’s men scored over 100 league goals in npower League One to secure their return to the Championship.

In 2011/12, another successful season followed as Darren comfortably secured their Championship status.

Later in 2014, Ferguson led Peterborough to victory in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final at Wembley to secure the club’s first major piece of silverware. Interestingly Ferguson has now won the trophy as a player and manager after scoring Wrexham’s second goal in a 2-0 win over Southend United in 2005. That same season he also guided the Club to the play-offs in Sky Bet League One.

The son of Manchester United’s legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson, Darren began his career under his father’s wing at Old Trafford. He stood in for the injured Bryan Robson in the first 15 games of United’s championship-winning season of 1992-93.

During his subsequent five years at Wolves, midfielder Ferguson twice reached the play-offs as the Molineux climb battled to regain top flight status.

With Wrexham, he was a stalwart for eight years spanning 310 appearances and 51 goals. During that time, he won promotion and lifted the LDV Vans Trophy after scoring the second goal in a 2-0 final victory over Southend.

He is also a graduate of the LMA’s Certificate of Applied Management at Warwick University.
