Pato has returned to Brazil in order to undergo exploratory surgery on his right knee, his club announced Sunday.

Pato could easily miss the rest of the season but an exact recovery schedule has yet to be determined. While fitness hasn’t been a strong point in much of his career, Pato has done well in 2022 with three goals and five assists in 22 appearances (14 starts) before suffering this injury in Saturday’s match against the New York Red Bulls. Jake Mulraney could see more time on the pitch now that Pato is out for the foreseeable future, though recent-signing Nicholas Gioacchini also has more to offer than we’ve seen so far.
