Artist Motoo Abiko, co-author of ‘Doraemon’ and creator of ‘El ninja attori’, dies at 88 – American Post

The police are investigating the cause of death, although apparently no signs of violence were found. Abiko was born in 1934 in the city of Himi, in Toyama Prefecture (on the east coast of central Japan), and aspired from his youth to become a manga artist (mangaka).

After graduating from high school in the city of Takaoka, to which he had moved from his neighboring hometown and where he met his other half for years, Fujimoto, he worked at the local newspaper, run by his uncle. He was in charge of doing portraits and interviews for the art and society section.

In 1954, encouraged by Fujimoto, he left the company and moved to Tokyo. He resided in the famous Tokiwa residence, where pioneers of modern manga such as Osamu Tezuka (Eisner award winner and creator of Astroboy) spent their youth and his careers flourished. That year the duo would adopt the stage name Fujiko Fujio and create several works together before splitting up in 1987.

Abiko would be professionally known by the pseudonym Fujiko A. Fujio, while Fujimoto by Fujiko F. Fujio. Among the works that Abiko leaves individually are titles such as El ninja Hattori (Ninja Hatori-kun) or The Laughing Salesman (Warau Salesman), which would be successfully adapted to animation series, among other works.

Fujimoto, creator of the popular cosmic cat Doraemon series, which for years has also influenced Abiko’s name, died in 1996 at the age of 62 from cancer.
