Enzo Ferrari (1898-1988) – Find a Grave Memorial
Entrepreneur and racing driver. He was one of the most important figures in motoring. In the 1920s he competed for Alfa Romeo and with the Arese brand he worked for twenty years holding various positions, from test driver to driver, from sales manager to director of the racing sector. But already in ’29 he founded the “Scuderia Ferrari” in Modena, a company that had as its objective to allow members to participate in car races, Ferrari soon became a sort of branch of Alfa Romeo both from a technical and competitive point of view. In 1940 Ferrari broke away from Alfa and, after moving the workshop from Modena to Maranello, a small town in the province, in 1946 it began to design and produce racing cars independently. The first Ferrari was the “125”, inaugurated on March 12, 1947 still without bodywork, and immediately followed by the “375”, a 4.5-liter (4500 displacement) 12-cylinder V model. When the Lancia team withdrew from racing, Ferrari returned the Lancia D50 model to its stable, with which it achieved numerous successes in the 1956 and 1957 Grand Prix. Another historic car released with the emblem of the prancing horse, the “Dino Ferrari”, it was built in 1957 and achieved great results between 1958 and 1960. In 1961 the “Tipo 156” excelled, as did the “158” in 1964, finally, the 3-liter model, the “312”, dominated the scene in 1966. In 1969 Ferrari sold 50% of its company to FIAT, a stake that became majority in 1988 after the death of the Emilian entrepreneur. Under the direction of its founder, the Modenese car manufacturer won over 5,000 sports races and 25 world titles in all categories of car racing from 1947 to 1988. In Formula 1 he has won the constructors’ world championship eight times and one of his drivers has won the world championship nine times (the last was the South African Jody Scheckter in 1979) .All the greatest Formula 1 drivers, from Alberto Ascari to Juan Manuel Fangio to Niki Lauda, from Gilles Villeneuve to Alain Prost to Michael Schumacher, competed and won at the wheel of a Ferrari. Enzo Ferrari, a figure of great personality and charisma, has been awarded numerous awards for his sporting and entrepreneurial genius. In 1960 the University of Bologna awarded him an honorary degree in mechanical engineering and in 1988 he received an Honorary degree in Physics from the University of Modena. He was awarded the UN Hammarskjöld Prize in 1962 and the President of the Republic’s Scuola della Cultura e Arte Gold Medal in 1970.
