Tage Thompson attended 11 different schools in the United States before graduating from Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 2014. He then played for the U.S. National Team Development Program before enrolling at the University of Connecticut for two seasons.

Following his freshman season, when he 32 points (14 goals, 18 assists) in 36 games, Thompson was selected by the St. Louis Blues in the first round (No. 26) of the 2016 NHL Draft.

Thompson again had 32 points (19 goals, 13 assists) as a sophomore, after which he signed a three-year, entry-level contract with St. Louis on March 7, 2017. He played the end of the regular season with Chicago of the American Hockey League, including getting three points (two goals, one assist) in 10 Calder Cup playoff games.

Thompson made his NHL debut in the Blues regular-season opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Oct. 4, 2017. Although he was sent down to San Antonio of the AHL after four games, he was recalled on Dec. 18, and three days later, he scored his first NHL goal in a 3-2 loss to the Edmonton Oilers.

Thompson finished the season with nine points (three goals, six assists) in 41 games, but on July 1, 2018, he was traded to the Buffalo Sabres as part of the package for forward Ryan O’Reilly.

He spent most of the 2018-19 season with Buffalo, where he had 12 points (seven goals, five assists) in 65 games.
