Whether you’re into long and plush or short and silky, we found the best robes that money can buy. First, we tried out some top-rated contenders, our testers rating the fit, feel, and warmth of each. We then combined these results with our own research and asked our editors to weigh in on their faves in order to compile our list.

When shopping for one, you’ll want to consider your home’s overall climate and temperature—if you’re always chilly, you’ll probably opt for fuzzy flannel over slinky satin to stay comfortable. And don’t forget to check the label for cleaning instructions: you’ll want something that can be machine or hand washed so you’re not running to the dry cleaners over every spilled drop of tea or wine.

Our absolute favorite on this list is Parachute’s Classic Bathrobe . It’s plush and cozy, yet light enough for year-round use. If you’re not looking to break the bank, the Honeydew Short Bathrobe is a soft, stretchy, and very affordable option.

Whether you use one post-shower or bath , slip one on for #selfcaresunday , or just like to generally be wrapped up when lounging around the house, there’s no denying that putting on a robe always elicits majorly cozy and relaxed vibes. But as any regular robe-wearer will tell you, not all robes are created equal (and if you’re anything like us, you judge hotels and spas by the quality of their robes…but we digress).

We highly recommended swapping your ratty sweats for this adorable robe whenever you’re logging some serious couch time. A terrycloth interior keeps you warm and cozy, while the striped pattern makes this look almost like real clothes. Bonus points for the hood, too.

This satin robe from Victoria’s Secret is super elegant, full stop. With a silky finish and floral lace detailing on the sleeves and hem, it’s the ideal combo of delicate and sophisticated. It comes in two hues—pale pink and burgundy—and is even machine washable.

Made of sustainable bamboo fiber, this pick by Ettitude is both hypoallergenic and cooling, not to mention feels extremely soft. This chic style is designed with a classic sateen weave and comes in four colors. Pick one up to make every day feel like a spa day .

All the robes from this company are fair trade and made from an eco-friendly production process where the silkworms aren’t harmed. The result? Silk that’s even softer than normal. Not to mention that silk is also hypoallergenic and, unlike cotton, won’t absorb moisture from your skin. And at the end of the day, it just feels so darn good. We also love the variety of fun geometric patterns and prints this comes in, which are block-printed in Jaipur using eco-friendly dyes. This is an ideal choice for anyone who is over basic white.

A robe that gets better and better with each wash? Yes, please. This waffle weave robe is an upgrade to your standard spa robe, offering perfect medium-weight and softness that lasts and lasts. Made of organic cotton sourced and woven in Turkey, the unisex style also has flattering double belt loops plus inseam pockets, another smart touch.

Another silky Flora Nikrooz beauty, this one is truly a showstopper, as its name suggests. We love the sheer netting of the sleeves and back, which add a delicate touch without being too revealing.

Wear this while getting ready on your wedding morning or on your wedding night—with sheer eyelet lace sleeves and trim, it’s affordable, sexy, and oh-so bridal. Its flowy fit will keep you comfortable, relaxed, and at ease for your big day.

Handmade in Nigeria, this option will make you feel relaxed and luxurious. Its maxi length offers full coverage, great for either getting ready or simply lounging at home. Since it’s made from 100% silk, the material is thermoregulating so it will help maintain your body temperature, no matter the season. It’s made-to-order, so if you want custom measurements then you can include them in the order notes upon purchasing.

From the brand known for ultimate loungewear and shapewear comes this majorly luxurious robe, made from real silk with a hint of stretch, thanks to a bit of spandex. With a wrap front and subtle piping, it’s the epitome of glam; the only thing missing is a butler to serve you breakfast in bed while you wear it. Coordinate with the label’s matching silk shirt, pants, nightdress, or slip.

Not only is this pleasingly plush, but it’s also extraordinarily soft and absorbent, choice if you like to slip into something super cozy immediately post-bath . You can also have it monogrammed (hello, great gift idea). It’s also Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex certified, meaning it’s been tested against potentially harmful substances during the manufacturing process.

Yes, the terry cotton of this robe is soft and cozy and all the good stuff you get with cotton. But the innovative version used here is air woven and so fast-drying that you could even skip using a towel when you get out of the shower if you really wanted to.

Made of thermoregulating silk, this helps maintain your body temperature, a nice feature for anyone who likes to sleep in a robe. Byrdie senior commerce editor Avery Stone is a big fan of this robe because—true to its name—you can throw it right in the washing machine: “Its brushed silk finish is luxurious but it’s shockingly easy to clean,” she says. “Also, its design touches—for example, its sleeves have elastic cuffs and it has an interior tie for extra security—give it a more structured, sophisticated vibe. Basically, it’s my weekend uniform.”

If you’re looking to go all out, you can’t go wrong with a Frette robe, according to former Byrdie editorial director Faith Xue . “Frette makes the most luxurious, comfortable, fancy robes,” she says. “I received one as a gift and it’s one of my most prized possession, especially in this day and age when lounging from home is the norm. It makes me feel fancy and soothed the second I put it on.” (Although this knee-length robe isn’t the exact one Faith has, it’s the ultimate in luxury, made from super-soft cotton terry and featuring a belt and sateen cuffs.)

Byrdie editorial project director Lindsey Metrus loves this robe from Eberjey because it’s incredibly soft. “Eberjey’s robes and pajamas are magical,” she says. “The fabric is so insanely soft and perfectly stretchy—it’s as if each one was knitted together by little fairy angels. This robe, in particular, is the ideal year-round post-shower frock to cuddle up in. I love a thick, cozy robe now and then, but personally, they feel a bit too bulky and hot, so I usually turn to thinner versions such as this. I could wear mine all day long!”

Tory Brangham , Chief Commerce Officer at Dotdash, Byrdie’s parent company, says that her teenage daughter received this robe as a gift for her birthday and hasn’t taken it off since. “I’m only sort of kidding,” she says, “But it’s fully lined with the softest fleece that makes it heavenly. The hood adds an extra layer of coziness and looks great, too.”

Made of modal jersey fabric that’s equal parts comfortable and breathable, this is a great pick for summer or for anyone who lives in warmer climates. Still, its ankle-grazing length offers plenty of coverage up while the kimono-style sleeves add a sophisticated touch.

“The material of the Brooklinen Super-Plush robe not only acts as a towel if you want it to—hello, one less thing to hang on my already overcrowded bathroom hooks!—but the absorbent material, which is made of 100 percent Turkish cotton, makes it so that I don’t get overheated the way I do with other bathrobes.” — Leigh Weingus , Product Tester

“I’m not exaggerating (okay, maybe a little) when I say this robe is the only thing that gets me up in the morning,” says Byrdie associate editor Holly Rhue . “I have a hard time getting out of my super cozy sheets, but I see this robe as an extension of my bed. It’s so soft, plushy, and warm without feeling overly bulky. I slip into this every morning and barely notice that I’ve left my comforter. It’s like a portable, cotton cocoon.”

Super soft with just a bit of stretch to it, this is ideal for throwing on when you’re getting ready. There’s both an inner tie and outer detachable belt, it’s machine washable, and the price tag can’t be beaten. The lightweight material and short length make it ideal for warmer months.

“One thing that really stuck out to me about this one was the pockets. I was able to slip my phone into them without worrying about it weighing down the robe and causing unevenness or even causing the robe to fall open, a surprisingly common problem.” — Leigh Weingus , Product Tester

Byrdie’s former senior social media editor Kelly Gallagher is a big fan: “I love everything Parachute, including their robes,” she says. “I actually have this robe and the Turkish waffle weave one and switch between the two, depending on the season. This one is definitely heavier, which makes it great for chilly mornings, and the terry material is ideal for using it right out of the shower. Plus, it gets softer and softer with every wash.”

It’s not surprising that there was once a 2,000-person waitlist for this standout staple. Made from 100 percent Turkish cotton, our top choice is plush and cozy, yet light enough that you can wear it year-round, making it an obvious best-seller. Design-wise, it boasts two front pockets for holding your lounging essentials, a waist tie for keeping it nicely wrapped, and a shawl collar.

Final Verdict

We’ll go ahead and say that you can’t go wrong with any of the above robes, but our absolute favorite would have to be the Parachute Classic Bathrobe, which once had a 2,000-person waitlist for good reason. Made from 100 percent Turkish cotton, it’s plush and cozy yet light enough to wear during the summer months. We also think a good robe shouldn’t have to cost a fortune, which is why we’re loving the Honeydew Short Bathrobe. It’s soft and stretchy—and also very affordable. Finally, when we want to be as cozy as possible (when don’t we?), we’re looking to the Brooklinen Super-Plush Robe. As the name suggests, it’s super plushy and soft without feeling overly bulky.

What to Look For in a Robe

A Style and Material That Fits Your Needs

Whether you’re planning to wear your robe post-bath or to simply cozy up on the couch, fashion stylist and author Heather Newberger recommends first asking yourself what your robe needs are and how you’d like to fulfill them—”especially if your last (couple) of robes didn’t really make the grade,” she says. “Always consider what didn’t work about them (Too hot? Too cold? Fabric feel too cheap?) and then get your priorities in order. Are you on the hunt for something sexy and chic, or purely for coverage? Would you rather don a robe that feels like a big hug, or one that looks expensive?” Ultimately, you’ll want to find one that checks all of your boxes.

A Comfortable Fit

This might seem obvious, but the comfort and fit of your robe are also important factors to keep in mind. A robe should always be comfortable, sure, but you should also consider what fit will be the most practical for the situations you plan to wear yours for. Are you looking to be cocooned in a blanket of softness as you sip tea and watch TV? Opt for a longer, oversized fit that will blissfully swaddle you. Looking for something you can easily throw on as you make coffee, cook breakfast, and do your makeup in the morning? You’ll be much better off with a shorter, more fitted style that’s lightweight enough to comfortably run around the house in.

Easy to Clean

Robes are just as prone to spills and stains as the rest of our clothing, so opt for a style that can be easily cleaned. While cotton robes can usually be easily tossed in the washing machine, there are also plenty of styles made from washable silk that won’t require a trip to the dry cleaners (but feel just as luxurious). Of course, always check the cleaning instructions on the label to make sure you’re taking proper care of your robe—especially if it was a splurgier purchase.

FAQ

  • What are the best fabrics for a robe?

Robes are available in countless different materials, but Newberger points out that some are better than others depending on your needs. She breaks down the most popular materials, below.

“Linen bathrobes offer unparalleled lightness, however before you purchase one, it’s crucial to consider that it may never return from the laundry the same way,” she says. “It also wrinkles more than any other material on earth, so you’ll very likely have to steam or iron your robe after every wash.” That said, linen is great for summer months but probably not the best for any situation where you might be prone to spills and stains. “Silk bathrobes, on the other hand, won’t leave you with a ton of maintenance; however, you do have to make sure to invest in a pure one,” she adds. “Silk blends are often mixed with polyester, which traps heat and can quickly make you want to take it off, rather than luxuriate in it.”

What about robes for keeping us warm post-shower or bubble bath? Newberger recommends reaching for classic cotton terry. “More insulating than alluring, I gravitate towards cotton terry for its quick absorbency and because it doesn’t leave any fuzzies on my skin after my post-shower routine,” she says. “Cotton waffle robes are also cozy and leave your skin feeling post-shower smooth—however, they’re often much thinner than terry and quickly absorb too much water, leaving you high and not at all dry.”

A more luxe option is cashmere, which Newberger says isn’t for everyone. “Personally, I find cashmere to be a bit prickly on my skin, and with its extremely low absorbency rate, I feel like they’re really just for show.” That said, consider cashmere a solid choice for keeping warm while lounging rather than for drying off.
